Offering a “Complete” solution to discipleship? You must be thinking I am out of my mind! We Christians have been at this for over two thousand years. There is significant division on the topic among church leaders. Concurrently apathy runs amok among Christ-followers of all shapes, sizes, ages, and demographics. Yes, believe it or not, I am going to provide you the guide to “Complete” Discipleship for the next decade. First, I need to explain WHY every single church, organization, and person has reason to gasp and adjust their life.
A few days after I returned from a trip to Indonesia in Mid-November, I tackled the “Mail Monster.” One item in my pile was a WORLD Magazine. Turning to page eleven I saw a large 49% listed with several other numbers in the right-hand column. I took a second to read the caption underneath the number. It took a minute for the reality of these words to sink into my mind before they began to grieve my heart. Here is what was written, “49% - The share of Millennials who identify as Christian, according to Pew Research Center, making them the first non-majority-Christian generation in American history.” According to most experts, Millennials (Generation Y) are the folks born between 1980 and 1995 or 24 - 39 years old.
Let me translate what this statistic means . . . WE FAILED!! Billions of dollars invested in discipleship have allowed an increasingly smaller group to continue in their passionate and faithful Christian pursuit. What is worse, most of us (myself included) will attempt to justify that things have gotten worse, but at least we have been faithful. We will point to the few people we have influenced, our loyal commitment to Christian churches and organizations, and certainly the moral life we have lived as indicators that certainly I am OK. WE ARE NOT OK!! Our efforts have resulted in the continual decline of people passionately following Christ.
With that being understood, I will outline four steps to a “Complete” 2020 Discipleship Guide. My next blog will detail those steps!
